how can we benefit you?

For the novice runner,

Using Cursus Coaching is a great decision!

Not only can we guide you with a training plan, but hiring a coach is a great way to create accountability that will keep you committed to your training!

As one client put it- “I’ve been lazy, and I’ve realized that I just need someone to tell me what to do!”

Research from Sport Journal on first time marathon runners has shown that gaining support is a critical factor for the marathon newbie, and working with a coach is an important means to gaining it.

I’ve been lazy, and I’ve realized that I just need someone to tell me what to do!

For the experienced and/or competitive runner,

Not only does getting a coach create accountability, but coaching from an experienced USATF certified coach, who has not only competed at the highest collegiate level, but also coached at it, can drastically improve your running!

For the youth athlete,

Is your child a new or experienced runner in middle school or high school? To be be a successful runner, they cannot just run during the Fall cross country and Spring track season, and expect to succeed. Cursus Coaching provides reasonable winter and summer coaching options for youth runners.

Whether you would simply like to see your youth runner finish a race, or you think they may be capable of running at the collegiate level, we can help them be successful.

Our coach has run and coached at the highest collegiate level, and may be able to help your youth runner get recruited to a college program.

How Does it Work?

You will receive communication regularly (frequency is based upon which coaching package you choose) so that an additional 2-3 week blocks of training can be designed to appropriately challenge your body to reach the next level! CC offers 3 basic coaching options as well as options for middle-school and high school runners during off seasons.

Upon payment, you will fill out a questionnaire about your current fitness level, goals, and injury concerns. Next, Julie will have an initial consultation to discuss your answers to the questionnaire and explain how they will approach your training.

Julie will then write 2-3 week blocks of training for you at one time and send it to you in a document. She does not like to write more than 2-3 weeks of training at a time because an athletes body is adapting throughout training, so their plan should too. This way, your training can easily be adjusted based on the rate that you adapt, and which workouts you are responding best to.

Julie ran cross country and track and field at Iowa State University where the team won 5 consecutive Big 12 Championships and placed 2nd at NCAA's. She earned her B.S. in biology from ISU.

Julie then ran at Virginia Tech for one year. Once her collegiate running career ended, she served as a volunteer coach for the Virginia Tech program during the 2016-17 season. That season the Hokie men won ACC team titles in indoor and outdoor track and field and the women won the ACC team title in outdoor track and field.

In the 2017-2018 season, Julie moved on to the SEC, where she served as a graduate assistant coach working with the cross country and track athletes at the University of South Carolina. She is also earned a Masters degree in Sport and Entertainment Management.

Julie holds USA Track and Field Level 1 coaching certification. She has also recently attended the 2017 USATFCCCA Convention and the 2017 Southeast Running Summit where she has learned coaching techniques from some of the greatest coaches and sports scientists in the United States, such as Joe Vigil. Coach Vigil has coached many Olympic and World Championship athletes to podium finishes.

Currently, Julie is still training and is coached by.. herself! She enjoys the challenge of creating a training schedule that both challenges herself enough to cause physiological adaptations to occur, yet does not challenge herself to a point of injury or burnout. She holds personal bests of- 1500m: 4:43, Mile (ind): 5:06, 3k(ind): 9:57, 5k: 17:24, 6k(XC): 21:21, 10k(road): 37:14, Half Marathon: 1:20:12. She recently finished  47th at the  Aramaco Houston half marathon and first in her age group, a personal best by 4 min and 40 sec! Later, she ran her debut marathon in 2 hours and 52 minutes as a result of self coaching. She has aspirations to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials by 2020.
